Why study Business & Management in Canada?

Business and management is the study of how organisations are set up, how they make decisions and how they turn people, money and ideas into products and services that others will pay for. It covers the core functions found in almost every company: accounting and finance, marketing, human resources, operations and strategy. It also asks wider questions about how firms compete, how they grow across borders, how they are governed and how they treat their staff, customers and communities. The subject draws on economics, psychology, statistics and law, and it applies as much to charities, hospitals and government bodies as it does to private companies.

Most programmes open with a broad first stage that introduces each business function, along with quantitative methods, economics and business communication, before letting students choose a direction. Teaching leans heavily on case studies, in which students analyse a real company's situation and argue for a course of action, and on group projects that mirror how teams work in practice. Along the way students learn to read a set of accounts, size up a market, plan a project and use data to support a decision. Many programmes include a placement, internship or consulting project with a real organisation, and assessment usually mixes exams, essays, reports and presentations.

Graduates work in a very wide range of roles. Common starting points include business analyst, management trainee, marketing or sales executive, human resources assistant, financial analyst, supply chain analyst and procurement specialist. With experience, many move into posts such as management consultant, marketing or brand manager, operations manager, project manager, risk analyst or sales manager, and some go on to start businesses of their own. Employers include consultancies, banks, consumer goods companies, retailers, technology firms, manufacturers, logistics networks, public bodies and charities. Which route is open to you depends on your specialization, the level you study to, the country you work in and the experience you gain along the way.

On Universta, the subject is grouped into eight specializations. Business Administration gives a rounded grounding in running an organisation and is the closest to a general management degree. International Business looks at trade, global markets and managing across cultures. Marketing covers customers, brands and pricing, while Digital Marketing concentrates on online channels, search, social media and customer data. Human Resource Management deals with recruiting, developing and rewarding people. Project Management, offered at master's level, is about delivering work on time and within budget. Supply Chain Management follows goods from sourcing to delivery, and Entrepreneurship is about starting and growing new ventures.

Business is an international activity, so studying it in another country is useful in its own right. Classmates from many countries, case studies drawn from different markets and placements with local employers give you a feel for how regulation, consumer habits and workplace culture vary. The United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia and Ireland teach business in English at every level, Germany and the Netherlands offer many English-taught master's programmes, and Japan has a growing number of English-taught graduate courses. Programme length, fees, entry rules and post-study work options differ between these countries and change over time, so check each university's own pages and the official immigration websites before you apply.
