About Engineering

Engineering applies physics and mathematics to build things that work, safely and within constraints of cost, material and time.
What you actually study
A shared foundation of mechanics, materials, thermodynamics, mathematics and electrical principles, followed by specialisation into mechanical, civil, electrical, chemical, aerospace or another branch. Laboratory work, design projects and a substantial final-year project are standard, and most programmes include work closely modelled on professional practice.
Who it suits
People who want to build and are comfortable with quantitative work and physical constraints. Engineering rewards precision and patience with detail more than flashes of insight.
Where it leads
Design, manufacturing, construction, energy, aerospace, automotive and consulting, with professional registration available in most countries after a period of supervised practice.
Programmes in this field differ considerably between institutions, so compare the module lists and the balance of theory to practice rather than relying on the degree title alone.
